NJASBO - March 24, 2020 Update and Webinar
Tuesday, March 24, 2020
To say that this is a time of great stress and uncertainty is definitely an understatement. Adding to that is the isolation that inhibits personal communication. We want you to know that we are aware of the need for you to receive answers to issues that are coming up in your districts. Please know that we are in contact with the relevant departments and are monitoring legislation. As I continue my daily and constant group forums with the other ASBO state Executive Directors I realize that these questions and need for answers are not unique to New Jersey.
In particular, many questions revolve around the issue of paying certain employees, vendors, ESCs, Cooperatives, etc. We appreciate the urgency of these issues however it will be important to consider the following in your decision making process. For example, existing unemployment benefits and impact of any pending Federal and state legislation which may be forthcoming. For those of you that are ASBO International members there is a Webinar regarding Federal Legislation on March 26th.
If not already drafted, numerous State bills are expected any day which may address some of these concerns, albeit perhaps in a circuitous way. One example, (although it may not be entirely relevant) is A3845 signed into law March 20th authorizing the EDA to make grants during periods of emergency to certain businesses. We anticipate many bills in the near future that may influence your decisions, always in consultation with your board attorney.
Unfortunately, according to the statement by the Governor yesterday this may be a marathon and not a sprint. We are all in this together. Everyone is feeling the pressure in their own way. Let us work together.
All the best,
Sue, Loretta, Lisa & Jamie
