Description of Excel series sessions:

Wednesday ~ 4/8/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 1: Conditional formatting and logical operators.

This session will look deeper into practical applications of conditional formatting for attractively presenting data, analysis, and tracking.  We will review the basics then explore conditional formatting based upon criteria. (Customized formula) The most common logical operator is an if statement, there are many applications for both simple and nested if statements that we will examine.

Wednesday ~ 4/15/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 2: Data validation

Data Validation is what Excel will allow to be entered into a cell, the default is anything, but you can customize this using both simple and complex criteria.  This feature is especially helpful if you are pushing out a spreadsheet to inexperienced staff, and as way to prevent errors by experienced users.  In the tips and tricks session we learned how to create drop down menus, we will use that as a starting point to explore many other criteria. We will also learn how to create instructions, and customized warning messages.  This is an easy, but extraordinary powerful tool that many Excel uses do not know.

Wednesday ~ 4/22/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 3: Criteria based count and sum functions.

While sum is the most used function in Excel, many uses are not familiar with criteria-based count and sum functions that are very useful for doing a quick analysis of data without having to table sort.  We will explore, countA, countblank, countif, countifs, sumif and sumifs with a focus on practical uses in a business office and school setting.

Wednesday ~ 4/29/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 4: Vlookup

Vloopup is a powerful tool for retrieving data from a large database such as a financial package or work order system.  It can also be very useful in billing and budgeting.  We will begin by examining the requirements for a lookup table and then explore the syntax and common causes of errors.  We also will explore how to perform two-dimensional lookups using nested lookups with a cheat table or a vlookup and the match function.

Wednesday ~ 5/6/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 5: Index and Match function as a replacement for vlookup and time functions.

This session will explore an alternative to vlookup that can handle both simple and two-dimensional lookups.  We will explore why this combination can solve some of the limitation of vlookup.  Although vlookup is more commonly used, index match is actually more logical and easier to debug.  We will compare both approaches side by side, so you will have both in your Excel toolbox.  This session will also explore time functions including functions that factor in weekends and school breaks.  This is extremely helpful in calculating any expense that varies based upon whether school is open or not such as utility costs or school bus fuel costs.

Wednesday ~ 5/13/2020 @ 10:30am

Session 6: Table sorting and basic pivot tables.

We will begin by looking at the benefits of converting data in Excel to a table, table esthetics and using table slicers for a whole host of application in a business office  We also will explore how to create pivot tables and pivot charts by looking at what is the criteria for a pivot table and ways to check your data set for errors.  You will learn how to create basic pivot tables for analysis and to present the data in a highly understandable and attractive form.
